Open that Bridge!

Today we were join by a guest and his two sons who are 4 and 6 years old. We sailed around Vineyard Haven Harbor looking at all the other boats and enjoying seeing the ferries go by. At the appointed time, we requested by radio that the draw bridge between Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs open so we could pass through. The bridge stopped all the cars, bikes and pedestrian traffic so we could safely pass. Once through the bridge, we set the sails and turned off the engine. We peacefully sailed the length of the lagoon for about a half hour and then dropped the anchor and had lunch. This was a one way trip so we took Dad and the boys to shore via the tender and they walked back into town. This was a great way to spend a non-beach day outside on the water and introduce the boys to sailing and the joys of being on the water. They enjoyed sitting on the bow, setting the sails, sitting in the captain’s seat, steering , and the tender ride. We hope to have them back aboard this summer and make this a father/son tradition.
